Instant Craftification : DIY Graffiti Washi Tape
I can't believe it's already the last day of my Week o' Washi! I've had the best time coming up with these DIY washi tapes, and cannot wait to start incorporating them into cards and other projects. Today's tape is by far my favorite, as it pairs my new-found love of washi tape with my long-time interest in painting. Before I reveal the tapes themselves, I'd like to share a peek at my completed tape "canvas."
Ok, so maybe I'm a little biased, but isn't that pretty snazzy? And underneath all of those layers of paint live strips of humble, boring, and very inexpensive masking tape. Pretty snazzy, indeed.
DIY Graffiti Washi Tape
Supplies
- Masking tape
- Waxed paper
- Acrylic paint
- Foam brush
- Paint pens (I used Elmer's Painters)
- Scissors
Cut a piece of waxed paper that is approximately 2" longer than you want your washi tape strips to be. Place the curled side of the waxed paper down onto a flat surface to help prevent curling. Cut a strip of masking tape from the roll, and carefully stick it to the waxed paper so there is a gap on all sides. Repeat until your waxed paper is full, placing the strips so that they touch one another.
Now is when the fun begins. Begin layering paints onto the tape. Start with a background layer of either all warm or all cool colors, then allow it to dry. Add a new layer of random shapes, blobs, swashes, dots, and other shapes (in the opposite side of the color spectrum than your first layer), and allow it to dry completely. Repeat with the opposite palette, and let dry. Once the tapes reach the level of depth that you are looking for, it's time to pull out your paint pens. Doodle, outline, or write onto the tapes with your paint pens until you feel satisfied with the outcome. Allow to dry thoroughly. Transfer the tapes to a fresh piece of waxed paper to store.
I really do hope that y'all enjoyed my Week o' Washi. I have to say that spending a whole week playing with faux washi tapes has me wanting to make even more, so don't be surprised if more washi-inspired projects pop up from time to time. My next post will mark my return to the regularly-scheduled bloggy programming. Until then, wishing you a very washi evening!
